'Lovehearts 01' Greeting Card

Grete Hjorth-Johansen is a London based Norwegian photographer, working on both commissioned and fine art projects. Her artistic background stretches from mural painting to graphic design and later VJing for the biggest names and venues in dance music.

For over 5 years she has been photographing the love declarations carved on the trees in a forest local to her in East London, and I now has over a thousand of them. She then colours and prints them in various ways, as they remind her of the colourful Loveheart sweets from childhood. The hearts start out perfectly carved by romantic couples but over time the bark starts to heal in unpredictable ways, and what’s left is often as messy as the love affairs themselves.

She has also turned them into street art, bringing the graffiti of the forest into the city, as a nod to the very selfish human desire to leave a mark everywhere we go, often without regard for the consequences.
